Most people hang a bathroom mirror to see their reflection. Interior designers hang it to move light around the room.
These are different problems with different solutions — and the difference shows.
Light Doesn’t Just Illuminate. It Travels.
When light enters a room, it doesn’t stop at the first surface it hits. It bounces. It reflects. It scatters. Every surface in the room — walls, floors, tiles, fixtures — absorbs some light and reflects the rest. The ratio of absorption to reflection determines how bright the room feels.
A mirror is the only surface in a bathroom that reflects almost all the light that hits it. Glass with a silver backing reflects approximately 95% of incident light. White tiles reflect around 80%. Dark tiles reflect as little as 10%.
This is why a mirror isn’t just a reflective surface — it’s a light multiplier. And like any tool, it works better when you understand how it works.
The Direction of Light Matters More Than the Amount
The most common bathroom lighting mistake is adding more light without thinking about where it goes.
A ceiling downlight directly above a mirror illuminates the top of your head and casts shadows on your face. It’s bright, but it’s not useful. A mirror that reflects this light sends it back toward the ceiling — which is already well-lit — rather than into the darker parts of the room.
The most effective bathroom lighting positions the light source at face level, on either side of the mirror or integrated into the mirror itself. This is the principle behind placing mirrors opposite windows in interior design. It’s not just about making the room feel larger (though it does that too). It’s about redirecting natural light into the parts of the room that the window can’t reach directly.
In a bathroom without a window — or with a frosted window that admits light but not a view — a mirror opposite the light source performs the same function. The light enters, hits the mirror, and bounces back across the room. The darker corners become lighter. The room feels less enclosed.
Why Bigger Mirrors Work Better
A larger mirror reflects more light. This is obvious in principle but underappreciated in practice.
A 500mm × 700mm mirror reflects a 500mm × 700mm patch of whatever is in front of it. A 1000mm × 700mm mirror reflects twice as much. In a bathroom where the primary light source is a ceiling fixture or a window, a larger mirror captures more of that light and redirects more of it into the room.
This is why full-length mirrors — 1800mm tall — are so effective in bathrooms. They capture light from the entire height of the room, not just the zone immediately in front of them. A ceiling light that would otherwise illuminate only the floor and the top of the vanity unit is captured by the full-length mirror and reflected across the entire room.
The practical implication: if your bathroom feels dark, the first intervention to consider is a larger mirror, not more light fixtures. More fixtures add more light at the source. A larger mirror redistributes the light you already have.
The Mirror Radiator Advantage
A mirror radiator — a radiator with an integrated full-length mirror — solves two problems simultaneously, but its lighting advantage is often overlooked in favour of its space-saving benefit.
A standard mirror radiator is 1800mm tall. This means it captures light from floor to ceiling — far more than a conventional bathroom mirror mounted at eye level. The reflected light fills the room from top to bottom rather than from eye level upward.
In a bathroom where the radiator occupies the only available wall, a mirror radiator turns a functional necessity into a lighting asset. The wall that would otherwise be occupied by a radiator — and therefore unavailable for a mirror — becomes the room’s primary light-reflecting surface.
The fog-free property of mirror radiators is also relevant here. A conventional mirror fogs after a shower, temporarily eliminating its reflective function. A mirror radiator maintains the mirror’s reflective surface throughout — the warm panel behind the glass prevents condensation from forming. The mirror continues to reflect light even when the room is at its most humid.
Practical Guide: Using Your Mirror as a Light Tool
Position the mirror opposite the primary light source. If your bathroom has a window, the mirror goes on the opposite wall. If your bathroom has a ceiling fixture, the mirror goes where it will reflect that light into the darkest part of the room.
Choose the largest mirror your wall can accommodate. The proportion rule applies — the mirror should occupy between one-third and two-thirds of the wall’s width — but within that range, bigger is almost always better for light distribution.
Consider integrated lighting. An LED mirror with integrated lighting positions the light source at face level, where it’s most useful, and reflects it outward into the room. This is more effective than ceiling lighting for both task illumination and ambient light distribution.
Avoid placing mirrors where they reflect other mirrors. Two mirrors facing each other create an infinite reflection that looks dramatic but distributes light poorly — the reflections become progressively darker with each bounce.
In dark bathrooms, use a high-gloss or polished finish on adjacent surfaces. A mirror reflects light most effectively when the surfaces around it also reflect rather than absorb. Dark matte tiles adjacent to a mirror absorb the reflected light before it reaches the rest of the room.

Does the shape of the mirror affect how it reflects light?
Yes. A rectangular mirror reflects light in a consistent direction — the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection across the entire surface. A round or oval mirror reflects light in slightly different directions across its curved edges, which can create a softer, more diffuse effect. For maximum light distribution, rectangular mirrors are more effective. For visual interest, round mirrors add character without significantly compromising light performance.
Should the mirror be lit from above or from the sides?

Does a frameless mirror reflect more light than a framed mirror?

How do I know if my mirror is positioned correctly?
Stand at the point in the room that feels darkest — usually the corner furthest from the window or light source. If the mirror is positioned correctly, you should be able to see the light source reflected in it from that position. If you can’t, the mirror is reflecting light away from the dark areas rather than toward them.
